Are you aware of the "Offline" map set (Data -> Background Maps -> Offline), and if so, is the issue that they are insufficient?
Thanks for the quick reply. I just tried the offline map that you suggested, unfortunately the zoom levels are not sufficient enough.
I notice a warning message stating that it is possible to download additional offline map details from Tableau web site. Would it be possible to download the whole map of Australia (which is our country of interest) up to street level?
Oh dear. I see we're still printing this message: "Some map details are not available. To see the complete map you can retrieve Online maps using the Data > Background Maps menu or download additional offline map details from the Tableau web site."
The "additional offline maps" project was kicked around for a couple years, struggling with map vendor issues and technical problems, before being put on hold: http://www.tableausoftware.com/forum/offline-map-cache
Thus, the answer re Australia is no, sadly. I believe the detail of our Online maps increased world-wide in 5.2 with our change of mapping vendors, but the Offline maps just don't provide a good "details" solution.
Yes that is exactly the warning message I encountered in Tableau Desktop when I tried to use offline background maps.
Thanks for the link by the way. We are now testing GeoServer as our alternate (or may become primary) WMS server for our Tableau. I also found this article in Tableau's knowledge base which also helps in the configuration: http://www.tableausoftware.com/community/support/kb/deploy-wms.
