# Show total for pie chart by country on geography map

I have a nice looking global map that shows the # of people by function in different countries.  The problem is that if I add text showing the values, it wants to naturally show me the value for each wedge of the pie which gets to a very busy chart.  What I'd like to do is show the total number of people on each pie (sum of all of the wedges) only, then you can visualize how many people are in each wedge by the wedge size vs. # people in a country.  Seems it should be simple but I can't figure out how to get Tableau to let me show this simple overall sum by country (vs. a bunch of numbers for each wedge slice).

Help appreciated.

I'd like to do a very similar thing. Anyone have any thoughts?

This problem of trying to combine different levels of aggregation in a single visualisation comes up a lot.

I posted about a somewhat similar problem a while back and one of the responses (from Robert Morton, who is one of the Tableau team) really helped me get my head around what the issue was.  Robert's suggested workaround didn't quite achieve what I needed - but it might just spark some ideas for you, so have a read of this thread:

Thanks again, Richard!

Hmm... there's no easy well-supported way to do this, at least.

I have avg number of thefts data at State & County level. The value for this variable ranges from 1 to 6 (6 - highest & 1 - lowest). Can I show this on the map like a layer i.e. county with the value "6" is represented by the darkest color? If yes, how can I do it?

Help appreciated.

I have a similar problem... the pie charts are covering up the country names, and I'd like to label each country, but it puts the country name on every slice of the pie chart rather than once for the whole circle.

I'm also interested in coloring in each country's shape (using a gradient to represent lower to higher numbers), but I haven't found a step-by-step explanation of how to do this yet. In this case I would want a label with the country name and the total number on the country.

I'd like to accomplish exactly what you've done in your "total for pie chart" analysis, but I can't tell/see how you did it.

I have a number of pie chart on a map and they are currently showing totals for each slice; but I'd like to show totals for the whole pie. See the screenshot below to see what I mean.  For the small pie in the middle near the middle of the screen that is 3 yellow and 1 green, I like there to be a "4" on that pie instead of the 1 and the 3.  How do I do this?
