Tableau 10.3 and 10.4 new feature demo for admins

Version 3

What are the new feature of Tableau Server 10.3 & 10.4? How to set them up on server settings? What are the server resource impacts? What are the controls that server admins have while enabling those new features? There Dec 15, 2017's demo focused the following new features. Please see the attached slides used:

    • Data-Driven alerts
      • Numeric axis only
      • Interactors decides alerts
      • Interactors can add any site users who have email address to the alerts
        • Permissions are checked before  emails are sending NOT when users are added (opposite to subscriptions).
        • Email will not go to those recipients who  have no permission to the view although those users can still be added w/o any warning or error.
        • Pls vote IDEA https://community.tableau.com/ideas/8048
      • Can’t add group as recipients
      • Alerts can be created on saved custom views
      • Live connection -  server checks hourly(can be configured)
      • Extract - whenever refresh happens
    • Tableau automatic query caching after extracts. The steps to implement this features are as followings(the workbook used to config threshold is attached):
      • Enable it on server:  tabadmin set backgrounder.externalquerycachewarmup.enabled true
      • Config workbook caching threshold: tabadmin set backgrounder.externalquerycachewarmup.view_threshold 2 (# of views of the workbook last 7 days / # of refresh in next 7 days)
      • Adjust overall server connection caching setting
      • Observe server CPU and memory impacts
      • Tune. If high CPU & menory impacts:
        • Warmup less workbooks (higher threshold)
        • Turn off caching warmup for a site
        • Turn off caching warmup for whole server
    • How Data source certifications works?
      • Does it work for embedded data sources? No
      • Who can certify?  Project Leaders with publisher site role
      • Does it have higher priority for extracts automatically? No
      • Can it be un-certified? Yes
      • Can Interactors tell that the workbooks using certified data source? No
      • What it means for workbooks using certified data sources? Depends
      • Can Desktop users see the certified data source? Yes
      • Would the certification status changes after revisions? No
      • Is there flag to see only certified data source on server? Yes
    • What are the differences between data source certification vs recommendations?
      • Certified is done by Project Leads or admin only
      • Recommended data source is picked by Tableau server automatically based on usage patterns, not only certified ones
      • Recommended tables are database tables that are used frequently in data sources and workbooks published to Tableau Server. Tables can be from certified, published data source and embedded data source tables
    • Publishing to older versions of server
      • Desktop 10.4 can publish to V10.2 or 10.3 server (not 10.1 or lower)
      • Can’t publish data sources to lower sever
      • After published to 10.2 server, the workbook becomes 10.2
      • Warning before continue….
