Communication error with data source

I am having trouble getting started with Tableau, because it will not open my Excel spreadsheet, which is saved on my desktop. Each time I have tried to open it, I get the message: An error has occurred communicating with data source. When I click on "more information," it tells me that it couldn't connect to the server. There is no server connection needed, as the file is saved locally. Does anyone have a suggestion for this?
