Blending in Tableau - Having indirect table relationships (t1 -> t2 -> t3)

Hi all,

I am experienced with QlikView and I am currently evaluating Tableau in order to understand better the existing similarities and differences. My evaluation is based on a small showcase with different data sources. The relevant data sources are Customers (Excel), Sales (Access), Items (Excel), and Regions (csv).

The Customers are linked to the Sales table via the Customer Number. The Sales table contains the transactions per customer. The Regions are linked to customers via the Region Code. One customer belongs to exactly one location.

There is no direct relationship between Sales and Regions which is currently causing my headaches. The relationship is indirect: Sales (Customer Number) -> Customer (Customer Number) -> Customer (Region Code) -> Regions (Region Code) -> Regions (Name).

I am trying to create a piechart with Sum(Sales) per Region. My primary data source is Sales. However, Tableau seems not to be able to establish the connection to the Region table (where the Region name sits) as there is no direct relationship between table Sales and Regions. How do I handle this?

I have already created a calculated field in my Sales table with the Region Code (the Region Code is taken by the primary data source Customers). However, I am not able to use this calculated field in creating a relationship between Sales and Regions.

Any ideas are very much appreciated. I have found another thread regardings this issue, but there is currently no anwers: Relationships between three data sources

Thank you, kind regards

Patrick
