Dimension-based sub-labels for an axis?

I'm trying to put additional labels (based on a dimension) on a time-based axis, but it keeps replicating the time-based axis across all the dimensions (when I want it to just overlay the dimension based on when they appear in time. Ideally, I would also be able to map background colors (or at least vertical lines separating) to visually separate the dimensions.

Here's an example:

Is this possible to do within Tableau currently?

Adding (only) horizontal scroll bar to extend visualization?

I have a line chart over time that shows relative positions between 6 different lines. However, the data is very granular, and the current worksheet window compresses the graph too much. Is it possible to add only a horizontal scroll bar so that I can extend the X-axis about 5-10x the size of the current worksheet window to be able to see the differences amongst the lines without them being squished together?
