User Filter - Row Level security

I am trying to apply security concept using username() and custom SQL user tables, but that solution does not seem feasible when dataset is quite large (1.5 mln rows) and there are multiple levels of security. Consider a security environment with a user table (80 users) and category table (10 distinct categories). In such environmnet a user can have access to a single or multiple categories. using approach presented by Tableau, the number of rows in dataset (inner join on category and user) multiplies number of rows in a dataset. In my case, the size of the dataset grew from 1.5 mln to 2.6 mln rows (using only 2 users and 3 categories). Does anyone have a better solution for applying security?
