"Unable to communicate with Tableau Public" when saving

I'm using Tableau Public v8.1 on Windows 7. I have had no problems for nine months, but now I'm having trouble saving my workbooks. The desktop program opens my existing workbooks without issue, and I can see the visualizations of the saved projects from my web browser and access my account to manage workbooks through Google Chrome. However, when I try to save changes to a workbook I've opened on the desktop program, I get the following error: "Unable to communicate with Tableau Public". On the program's home tab (upper right corner, and on starting up the program) I get the message "It seems you're not online" though I clearly am since I am able to connect with the server to open and start working on existing projects (as well as get online to start this forum message). Any tips? I've closed the program and restarted it; restarted the computer; tried saving a new workbook instead of an existing one. Thanks for your help!
