Calculated fields across blended data sources

Hi,

I have two data sources, one is an TDE of an excel workbook, the other is a standalone excel file, connected live. The first acts as the primary data source, the second acts as a set of lookup defaults which can be edited on-the-fly. If a value is missing for a particular column in the primary data, then i can take a default for that category from the second file.

Using a basic IF statement, i'm able to return the correct values as i'd like to. However the problem comes when i then want to display counts per grouping. When i set this calculated field as the dimension, and a count of the primary key as the measure, i get a * as the only row, with count equal to total number of rows.

I was able to do this when i had both datasources in the same excel workbook, and joined via the Multiple Tables functionality in a single datasource. However, as I need to have these two data sources separate i'm now hitting issues.

I've attached a twbx which i hope explains the problem - in here i've used two text files as the underlying data rather than xlsx, but the problem still remains. Additionally, the dataset in reality is a lot larger, with many more defaults, but i hope it is still representative.

Any help much appreciated.
