assign a position number to each record based on date

Hello,

My data set has a record ID number in each row, which represents a person. Each person may show up one or more times. I would like to assign a position number to each record to identify whether this is the first, second, etc time the person has appeared in the data set. The position would be based on a date field. I'm guessing this is relatively easy to do, but I just can't quite get it figured out. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
