I think we need to review the logs to find out the root cause of the error. I would recommend contacting Tableau Technical Support with the logs.

Has this error been resolved by Tableau? I am getting the same error on a flow that I ran successfully on Aug 9, i.e. before the update to Prep version 2019.2.3 and I cannot run now (with the exact same data set so we should exclude data issue).

Same problem for me running the new 2019.4.2: "system error: system error."
The flow is the same file that worked fine, on the same Excel files, prior to updating.
I've run into this issue a few times. It's either the data type of join fields not match or aggregation needed to removed duplicated dimensions before join.
