    Tableau Prep is consuming (very) much memory

    Fabio Bacellar

      Hello, everyone.

      I have Tableau Prep 2018.2.3 up and running, but it has serious performance problems. It is consuming much memory, and I haven´t even started to drawthe flow.

      When I start the aplications, my memory usage goes like this:

      Any idea of what´s going wrong?

          Guy, lucky you it is so small

          I was able to get my machine to following

          CPU:100%

          Memory 95%

          SSD 100%

          for round about 20 min

          CPU=I5

          Memory 32GB

          SSD: Samsung EVO

          nothing else was running on the machine

            Hi,

            Every release of Tableau Prep so far has used a lot of memory & CPU compared to other applications, I'm no sure why.

            Paging Maraki Ketema (one of the Prep product managers).

            Jonathan

              Thanks for the page, Jonathan!

              Sorry to hear that you all are running into this. Could you all take a moment to answer some of these questions?

              1. What version of Tableau Prep are you on? If you're not on 2018.3.2, I would encourage you to update as there are many awesome fixes in that release.

              2. If you are using the 2018.3.2 release, are you seeing these issues? If so:

              • Are there specific operations or actions that result in this behavior?
              • How many rows and columns are in your flow? Would you able to share your flow with us?
              • Could you tell what your machine specifications are?

              Thank you!

              -Maraki

                Hi, Maraki! How are you doing?

                The info you asked:

                What version of Tableau Prep are you on?

                I am running version 2018.2.3, since I have failed in updating into the newest version. I've opened an issue for that;

                Are there specific operations or actions that result in this behavior?

                The almost 1Gb of memory usage shows up when I start Prep (no action yet). When I try to open a MySQL Connection, memory goes to 1.8Gb memory usage and after a few moments, Prep freezes. I have to kill the process through Task Manager

                How many rows and columns are in your flow? Would you able to share your flow with us?

                As said before, no flow... just the application....

                Could you tell what your machine specifications are?

                Intel Core I5 2.5Ghz with 16GB, installed in SSD drive. Enough free space in disk.

                  Thanks, Fabio! Could you send over the case number please so I can follow up?

                      Hi again!

                      I followed all the recommended steps, but it didn't work out...

                      • Uninstalled Visual C++ Redistributable 2017
                      • Unistalled Prep Version 2018.2.3
                      • Unistalled Tableau Desktop versions 2018.3.1 and 2018.2.1
                      • Restarted the computer
                      • Tried to install Prep (Run as Administrator)

                      The error took a bit longer to appear (I could see the the program installing Visual C++ Redistributable 2015), but the same error appears....

                      Tail of the error log
