Wow. I would have expected ISMEMBEROF to do exactly what you want to do!

For anyone else who finds this post, I was able to get around this issue by using two calculated fields. One to return a string that matched the Group Name in Tableau Server. And One to use that string with ISMEMBEROF() to do filtering.
IF ISMEMBEROF("Alpha") THEN "Alpha"
ELSEIF ISMEMBEROF("Bravo") THEN "Bravo"
ELSEIF ISMEMBEROF("Charlie") THEN "Charlie"
[Team] = [GroupCalc]
This is a good workaround.
Just comment the calcs lavishly. If you ever add groups or change group names, you (or your replacement a few years from now) will have to change the calcs. I hate hard-coded stuff for this reason, but the inability of ISMEMBEROF to accept a variable forces this.
