From the looks of it, I'm certain that you did not remove the broken registry for services of your
old Tableau Server 2018.1. The uninstall setup of Tableau Server does not remove the registry
of its services upon removal, that's why I used some tools to remove it.
you can try to install it for a moment and remove it immediately after using it to remove the broken registries.
Reconfirmed with our team, and they are still not comfortable installing the CCleaner app.
However, I tried to start the Tableau Server Service Manager and found that it's not startable as it's looking for the following executable which is non existent.
"D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\services\tabsvc_0.20182.18.0627.2230\tabsvc\tabsvc.exe" run
But the actual location should be 'D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\services\tabsvc_0.20183.18.1019.1426\tabsvc\tabsvc.exe'
I updated this path using the registry editor and now I am able to start the 'Tableau Server Service Manager' service.
Now all the 6 Tableau services are running.
But the initializing process is still stuck at step 6.
Is there a way I can refresh this initialization, so that the process moves on?
Try to restart all services if you want to proceed with your current setup but
if you want to try again, I just found something on tableau.
try to use the obliterate command using command prompt
Run the tableau-server-obliterate script:
C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\packages\scripts.<version>\tableau-server-obliterate.cmd -y -y -y -l
Check if the services are also removed after using obliterate command.
In this case your current 2018.3 installation will be removed. after removal (if success)
follow again the guide from the beginning.
Successfully executed the obliterate script. Removed the environment variables, restarted the machine and completed the services logon step as you suggested in the original post.
Till here everything worked.
Started the installation and again the initialisation stopped at Step 6. This time however in the services, I could not find the 'Tableau Server Service Manager' service.
What can I do here?
I think your doing good, the Tableau Server Services Manager will be installed while
initializing. Its written in the guide .
Just wait for the initialization to finish.
That's good to hear.
Generally, how much time will the initialisation process be taking for Step 6? Currently, 28 minutes since I started this process. So that I can plan my day accordingly.
It should be quick, but if still initializing just wait patiently.
If it takes too long again, please try to restart all the services.
Please disable your Anti-virus if you have the realtime-scanning
or active scanning.
I did come across 1 more entry in the Environment Variables NOT captured in Bryan's elaborate guide. He captures these below
There is one more entry there with a name TSM ** Failure with a Flag Entry of "1" please ceck if you have that as well and delete it. Then redo your install again. Follow the guide pay close attention to the instruction on deleting the Directory C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\
Do capture the screenshot of that entry if u find it and add it to Bryan's Thread to help others.
Never Say Never Buddies. I was able to upgrade to 2018.3 I will add the extra steps in the course of the week to help others as well. Now am really in Vacation Mood
I waited for the Step 6 to finish without success. When I restarted the services and Retry the initialisation, it moved to Step 8 and again got stuck there.
Not sure what is the issue here.
As suggested earlier, I made sure I removed all the old Tableau server folders in C drive. I am trying to install in the D drive (not the default location). Do I need to check for something else in this case?
Thanks for the info. As I am installing from PreTSM to 2018.3, I do not see that environment variable in my server.
I also did this from the PreTSM to TSM environment. I have followed Bryan's exact steps with abit of modification here and there since I was doing it in a cluster.
- Can you Show the screenshot of your Environment Variables?
- Also ensure you use the local admin account in the server to deploy
- Check hidden path in C:\ ProgramData\........
- Did it progress?
Can you also show the tail of your Install log?
I already have that screenshot and knew where it occurs.
The TSM_CLEAN_INSTALL_FAILURE. I updated the guide also.
I just forgot it but thanks for reminding.
Ayoub Briki , try this way as it worked for me in our Active Directory environment: username@domainName
So if my account is in the AMERICAS domain (versus APAC or EMEA) and my normal logon ID is erkson then I would logon with erkson@americas
Unfortunately, I had to roll back to 2018.1 as our customers are dependant on Tableau dashboards.
But, if anyone can test this in a sandbox and see what the issue is, it would be great.
