    Connect 2 points on scatter

    Andrew Hills

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong - so

Take this simple block of data:

      DatePrediction WeekPredicted PointAxis order
      12/07/2018nullnullnull
      19/07/2018nullnullnull
      26/07/2018nullnullnull
      02/08/2018nullnullnull
      09/08/2018nullnullnull
      16/08/2018nullnullnull
      23/08/2018nullnullnull
      30/08/201888001
      06/09/2018nullnullnull
      13/09/2018nullnullnull
      20/09/201825-24502

As best I can tell I should be able to drop the pills as such:

Then The Marks tab like this:

Filter out Axis order is Null.....and et voils, I should get a single line between the two points.....Right?

So why isn't' it happening? Any ideas?

      Thanks in advance

Try removing the first pill from detail, like this:

You're running into a level-of-detail problem. Because that field is on detail, Tableau will try to connect dots related to each value of the dimension separately. So, if you had multiple records for the dates, that would work. Take, for example, the following data set:

          DatePrediction WeekPredicted PointAxis order
          30/08/201888001
          30/08/2018151002
          20/09/201825-24501
          20/09/201818-10002

With this, you're setup would work because each member of "Date" has two points which can be connected according to Axis Order.

Just thinking about this a bit more, my guess is that your goal would be to connect certain points to certain other points. In that case, I'd suggest that you insert one more field into your data set, Path. This would be an identifier of each unique line you wish to draw.

            DatePrediction WeekPredicted PointPathAxis order
            7/12/2018
            7/19/2018
            7/26/2018
            2/8/2018
            9/8/2018
            8/16/2018
            8/23/2018
            8/30/2018880011
            9/6/2018
            9/13/2018
            9/20/201825-245012
            10/1/20181010021
            10/20/201815-150022

Then you could build your view as follows:

              Gahh!

Of course the Axis Order on the Path would act like a detail split as well!  What a moron.

              Brilliant, thanks for that Ken!
