Toby always asks the really hard questions That's my way of saying I have no idea...
I've opened a case with Tableau Support to find out.

Hey there. I just thought of a similar question posed to support a while ago. Here is the context that may help you.
Also, there are some settings within the ODBC administrator (outside of Tableau), that can be set. So for our Greenplum and SQL Server deployments, we set the pool connection to 60 seconds. I think sometimes we have set the Postgres one too, but each time we do an upgrade, we forget to re-pool it, and in fact we don't notice any real performance improvement with pooling turned on anyway.
Also, I see in the 2018.3 beta, there's a JDBC option available, we haven't tested this yet.
Thanks Jeff. I'm not sure I like the idea of connections being left open until terminated by the db I have our cache set to "Balanced" at 5 minutes so would that terminate the connection if not being used after 5 minutes?
While we have a couple ODBC connections, they aren't pooled. If anything it's actually the native connections I'm more curious about. The examples they provided don't quite make sense to me, however, I'm not a college-degree server admin so I have a handicap.
FWIW, most of our workbooks use extracts and I think I did some testing early on in my life with Tableau, and found that once an extract (via a backgrounder) completes, then the connection is closed. But, maybe what he's referring to is live connections. I'm not sure about the caching strategies and what this does to the connections.

Tableau's excellent Support basically pointed me to two links and they seem to deal with Live data sources:
- 1 -
I found these default values in my ...\data\tabsvc\config\workgroup.yml file:
- 2 -
In the same file were the following values:
Interesting that I haven't made any changes yet my values don't match the default values
While a step in the right direction the answers create questions as they are not well documented So I'm waiting for more info from Support...
