# Adding Filters to Context - FIXED LODs

I have been trying to complete online courses for LODs and I'm a bit confused on when it is appropriate to add a filter to context.

As I understood it, when using FIXED LODs, any filters you want to affect the FIXED LOD need to be added to context.  Any filter not added to context will not affect the FIXED LOD.

Is this correct?

The reason I ask is because I'm adding several filters to my View and it significantly changes the view in ways I did not anticipate.  I still need to prove it out, but I thought I'd start with asking a question.  Thanks!

You understanding is correct, Stephen. Have a look at the Tableau Order of Operations (taken from Tableau's Order of Operations ):

As you can see above, Context Filters are applied before FIXED LOD calculations. Therefore, the LODs will take those filters into account. Regular filters (Dimension and Measure filters) are applied after FIXED LODs are calculated so they will not impact the LOD. Hope that helps. Happy to take a look at a workbook if you have specific concerns.

What about a calculation based off of a FIXED LOD expression that isn't added to the view...

For example... I have a FIXED LOD that says something like:

{FIXED [Date],[Serial #]:MAX(IF [Work Center]=Assembly] THEN "T' ELSE "F' END)}

but I don't add that expression to the view... I add one based on the FIXED LOD

ie.

COUNTD(IF [Fixed Expression]="F" THEN [Serial #] END)

DO I still need to add the filters to context?

Really appreciate the help

Yes, you should still need to add the filter to context if your calculated field is based on an LOD even if the LOD is not on the view.
