New server licensing question - Guest Access?

    Lucy Cook

      Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how 'Guest Access' on the server will work with the new licensing model? We currently have an 8 core server and have used guest access to embed dashboards on to our intranet, would that still be possible with the new model? Or does the paying per user mean guest access is no longer a feature of the server?

      Thanks

      Lucy

          Hi Lucy,

There is some confusion in regards to the newer licensing model so I'll try to clear some things up.

For prior customers if you want to upgrade to 2018.1 or 2018.2 and continue to use a "core" license that's perfectly acceptable.  As you've mentioned a "core" license allows you the option to enable/disable the Guest account.  Plus there are new features available that existing customers would like in these versions but may not be interested in moving to the new Subscription model and you don't have to if you're not ready or it may not make sense (ie your organization makes *extensive* use of the Guest account).

Now if you'd like to move to the new Subscription based model, the *minimum* version of Tableau Server you would need to be on would be 2018.1.   If for example, you're running version 10.5, the Tableau Server keys for the new roles won't work on that version, would have to be either 2018.1.x or 2018.2.x.   The newer Subscription model comes with updated Tableau Server keys that "unlock" the new roles present in 2018.1 and 2018.2 but again you can stay on a current "core" or "Interactor" license.

Probably not a bad idea to reach out to your account manager to help clarify any additional questions.
