# View data over two years in continuous line graph

Hi!

I have a graph where I would like to display a progress over two years. I need to use a continuous graph so I can fix the axis ranges to show the goal values (this seems to be impossible in the discrete graph). The problem I have is that I can't fix the x-axis values over two different months. What I would like to have is the month name and year on the x-axis (like you can have in a discrete graph). How can I do this?

Hi Johanna,

You'll notice there are two sets of Year, Quarter etc.

The first ones are discrete date fields, so you'll find 2015, Q2. Even if you then convert this to discrete, it's only converting the discrete parts into continuous. You'll actually want the second set of dates highlighted in red below:

You'll see the preview now for month is May 2015. These are continuous date fields which you'r looking for.

Thanks,

Mavis

That worked great! Thank you! I now have another problem that you maybe know the answer to. I have created reference lines to show which date corresponds to the different values. To make it even clearer I would like to make the green line and dark blue line shorter so they end when they intersect with the constant value. Do you know how to do this?

Johanna,

Unfortunately I don't believe you can do this. These continuously lines will span across the length and I don't believe there's a control for the length.

Thanks,

Mavis

Thank you for your help Mavis. Do you know if there is any way to just place a marker on the specific coordinate? I have searched for this function but I have not yet found a way to do this.

Hi Johanna,

Would you be able to draw up a mock up of what you want?

Thanks,

Mavis

I would like to have floating points that mark out the reference values. Similar to the dots that I drew on the picture.

Hi Johanna,

You could blend in another dataset with your specific points. I have created a separate dataset which only has two dates and a value.

I created a blend between my primary and secondary data source based on date and then I added in the values from both data sources into rows.

Then I created a dual axis, synchronised the axis and hid the header:

So now you can see I've got my linen chart and also my two points.
