It should not be necessary to deactivate the trial key first - multiple keys can be activated simultaneously with no issues. Are you receiving any errors or other notification of failure when activating?
Firstly thank you for replying. The thing i am facing is after in do
tsm licenses activate -k <product_key>
it is not giving me anything. i can't see the process moving forward. Neither it is giving me any error message. I don't know what to do.
Which version of Tableau Server are you in?
Are you purchasing Tableau Server Interactor License or Explorer License?
Are you able to see your keys on Tableau Server i.e., login ==> Navigate to Settings then click on Licenses.
Are you still getting the issue.

I am using Tableau server 2018.1 . I am just adding a license to extend my Trail for server. But i have re-installed my server and added the key. sorted now.
