How to update the 'live' connection from an Excel file?

    Wui Heng Goh

      Hi,

I have already done the Tableau Worksheets and Dashboards.and save the working Excel file as 'live' connection in Tableau 10.5

      Now I would like to

      • Add new column in my excel file with new records value
      • Update the value in the existing excel column

Can I know if I can do a refresh and all the graphs in Tableau Worksheets and Dashboards updated?

I try click on "Refresh Data Souce" from the "Data Source" tab but it does not refresh.

Can someone help me on these?

I prefer not to save the Excel file as an "extract". I need to save the tableau workfile to a lower version.

Other users can only view Tableau with older version.

      Thank you.

          Hi Wui,

Have you saved that workbook in twb or twbx?

-> when you save as twb. it should work fine.

-> but in case of twbx when you save the workbook with excel as a live data.

it will make a copy of that excel file and save it in  "C:\Users\<your-user>\AppData\Local\Temp\TableauTemp\1877685823\Data\en_US-US"

if you have to update your tableau dashboard, you need to make your dashboard connected to excel file present in above URL.

also, if you can save the excel file on the server and with proper access permission and publish your workbook to the server and make changes in excel present in server location, then you can achieve your requirement.

            Hello Wui Heng,

It seems to me in your descriptions, some concepts are mixed up.

However I assume your requirements are,

            - Tableau workbook uses an Excel file as data source.

            - The Excel file is placed on a share folder and it will be updated via Excel.

            - When the data in the Excel is updated, the views in the workbook is expected to be updated too.

            - The connection to the Excel file is expected to be live, not extract.

            Then please refer to

            Connecting to Data Sources

Section "Share CSV, Excel, or Access files via a live connection"

            Regards

            Lei

              Hello Wui Heng

Make sure that the connection with your data is live, and not the extract,

and after that if data is not getting refresh then i would prefer you to restart the workbook or add the data source again.

              Thanks,

              Lovepreet

                Hi Lovepreet,

I savde the Tableau file in twbx format and not twb.

There is no server for me to store the Excel working file. All these files are store locally in laptop.

Do you suggest me to save the Tableau to twb file, refresh the 'live" connection to the Excel file before I can get an updated column in Tableau dataset?

                Many thanks in advance.

                  Yes, Wui

step 1) save the workbook to twb, make sure your workbook points to the right excel file

step 2) make some changes in excel and save

step 3) open the tableau workbook and refresh the data, you will see the updated records
