Maybe you need give permission for the user that running the Tableau service.

Yes, I created the extracts and they were saved to my C:drive. C:\Users\rwalker\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources
the standard site Tableau suggested when I saved.

Since I have updated to 2018.1 I have not had the issue anymore.
Rob, You stated "I upgraded to 1.5.3 today". Did you mean you upgraded to version 10.5.3? Then the issue went away when you upgraded to 2018.1?
I am having the same issue but cannot upgrade. My issues come from moving files using tabcmd from one server to another.
