    Tableau server license vs reader

    ted reilly

Hi guys - we are fairly new to Tableau and have 20 server users along with 10 online users and 5 desktops.

We have a report that basically goes to more people than we have licenses. 90% of these people will never need to interact with the report except for the clickable regions of the report.

Do a lot of people still use the reader?  My initial goal for the server and online product was for users who need to interact with the data sets and expand on existing analysis.  Essentially to keep data governance in place.  The idea was not to use them as viewers although it does well at that, it becomes expensive.

Thoughts on this approach?  Should I be handing out more desktop readers?

          Hello ted,

          First, a link for reference.

          When to Use Tableau Reader

You mentioned "Essentially to keep data governance in place".

Thus Tableau Reader might not be the proper solution for you.

Who to use What? How about the use case?

I usually think in these ways,

Want to analyze with more flexibility?

Buy a Tableau Desktop license for this person!

Want to analyze with limited flexibility?

Create a  new user on Tableau Server/Online for this person!

(if there is still vacant seat)

Want to interact with Tableau workbooks?

Create a  new user on Tableau Server/Online for this person!

(if there is still vacant seat)

          Just want static reports?

Provide PDF or PNG, by using tabcmd + task scheduler

          For example,

          tabcmd export  ... --pdf

          tabcmd export  ... --png

For more information, see tabcmd Commands

          Regards

          Lei
