The Hechinger Report (based at Teachers College, Columbia University) is looking for a data visualization developer to help to design data visualizations to augment our coverage. The position would work closely with our investigations editor to conceptualize and execute long term projects as well as with other reporters and our web editor to create graphics to accompany other stories.
We cover inequality and innovation in education with in-depth journalism that uses research, data and stories from classrooms and campuses to show the public how education can be improved and why it matters.
This addition to our editorial team will take the lead in finding new ways to tell education stories through databases, maps and visualizations. This position will be based in our New York City office. Candidates based outside the NYC area will be considered if they are exceptionally qualified.
Experience with and a portfolio of data visualizations, including static and interactive graphics
Familiarity with mapping programs such as QGIS, TileMill, and TopoJSON.
Experience cleaning and analyzing data
Advanced knowledge of Excel and SQL
Preferred candidate will have expert knowledge of Excel and SQL, experience using programming languages, such as Python, and web frameworks, such as Django. Background in journalism, either work experience, education or both, is also preferred.
