Is there a difference between Data Driven Alerts packaged with 10.3 and VizAlerts

    Hari Dattada

      Hi,

We recently upgraded to 10.3 and started using the data driven alerts feature that is available. I am just exploring VizAlerts to see if it will provide me the same functionality of data driven alerts with added SMS feature?

      Thanks,

      Hari.

          Hi,

That’s great that you’re using the data driven alerts in 10.3!

VizAlerts and Tableau’s native functionality have a lot of overlap (VizAlerts has served as an inspiration to the Tableau devs and we’re really happy when they copy what we’ve built) however they are set up differently.

Data driven alerts are set up visually in the Tableau Server interface by the users who want to receive the alerts or admins who want them to receive it. Data driven alerts also have built-in ability to minimize the number of alerts sent. Data driven alerts are only sent as emails to licensed Tableau Server users and the style & content of the email is defined by Tableau.

VizAlerts are set up more in a batch mode by some sort of administrative user. While thresholds and only-send-when-data can have completely the same results as Tableau’s native data driven alerts, VizAlerts does not presently have the ability to minimize the number of alerts sent (there are some workarounds but they don’t have the ease of use of Tableau’s single drop-down).  VizAlerts can be sent as SMS or email and the style and content of the alert messages are totally controllable. And VizAlerts does not run on Tableau Online at the time.

So with VizAlerts vs. data driven alerts there’s a tradeoff of having more control in VizAlerts while also needing more work by the VizAlerts admins to set up the alerts. If you have more questions I’d be glad to answer them!

              Hi,

It looks from the logs like you haven’t done any configuration of the .\config\vizalerts.yaml file. There are instructions on what to do in the VizAlerts install guide.
