Here is a great article on the topic: https://www.theinformationlab.co.uk/2016/06/23/wont-tableau-refresh/
Basically the refresh of the data source is happening in the background but the article above explains it well. I use scheduled refreshes instead. You can schedule your refreshes to be every X if needed and then the manual one is not needed.
I hope this helps,

Thanks for your reply , I read the article , but i cannot catch any point about my question.
My problem is my extract on TS was already refresh and updated successfully.
but when I click dashboard toolbar refresh button (as below IMG) on Tableau Server , my dashboard was not change , it also show with old data.
I sure my extract was really updated , because when I reload web browser page , my dashboard will change with the updated data.
Could you tell me why dashboard toolbar refresh button did not change my dashboard ?
thank in advance
Morning Zeng, could you please tell what kind of data source are you using?
Data source is Oracle, and I use extract (not live connection) , thanks
This can happen quite often and has happened a few times to me too. It might not be the case with you but it is possible that the browser is using a cached version of the workbook so clicking the refresh button on server won't do much. What we usually do from our end is:
Append "?:refresh=y" to URL of the view. For example: http://servername/views/workbookname/dashboard1?:refresh=y
This almost always then shows the updated data (given that your data extract has refreshed successfully)
Hope this helps
Did your issue resolve with Vishal's solution?
Let me know. Otherwise, I'll help you in solving other causes of that.
I had try Vishal's solution, but it didn't work to me.
Maybe I need your help ,
thank you very much
Zeng, Please check whether you've published a workbook with the “Include External Files” option. This option should be un-check during publishing. Another thing is that, please check whether you've embedded extract in your workbook. For proper operation of extract, you should embed the extract in your workbook,
I'm sure I have embedded extract in workbook correctly.
below image is my workbook on Tableau Server , contants one dashboard with a connect to an extract datasource
After I refresh the extract datasource, I reload "browser page" ... then my dashboard will show what I want, so I convinced my operation of publish workbook with embeded extract is no any problem.
Anyway, my problem is that ... After I refresh extract datasource on Tableau Server...then....I do different two action to refresh dashboard's view
1. reload dashboard's browser(IE,Firefox) web page => dashboard is OK (with refreshed data)
2. click dashboard toolbox refresh button => dashboard not changed (with old data)
Could tell me other causes of that ?
How often does your workbook refresh data extract?
Maybe it is because you use an extract data source, so that the refresh button on the top did not work.
If the data source uses live connection, the button may work.
Exactly, when I use live connection , the refresh button work fine,
So...you mean...refresh button only can work for the data source uses live connection ?!
if I want to refresh dashboard with extract datasource, the only one way is reload browser page ?
Hi Zeng, I just found your thread, which is even older than the following, but this is a real deficiency in how Refresh works with embedded extracts. You're not doing anything wrong.
