7:30 – 8:30 Community Story: Driving Growth at CashStar
CashStar enables retailers to achieve faster growth by enabling clients to respond quickly to market demands and launch revenue-generating business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) prepaid commerce experiences with minimal effort. We made a strategic decision to use Tableau to get better business insights into B2C and B2B data to support our product, marketing and sales growth objectives. In this session we will discuss company and market background, challenges we faced, solutions we implemented and lessons learned. We will also show examples of dashboards in use.
8:30 – 9:00: The Use and Abuse of Color in Dashboard Design
Just because you have 16 million colors at your disposal doesn’t mean you should use them all. Indeed, of the 28 dashboards showcased in The Big Book of Dashboards, the vast majority only use three colors (and only one has more than four colors.)Color abuse is one of the leading causes of “screaming cat” visualizations. (Not sure what a “screaming cat” is? You’ll find out in the session.) In this presentation Steve Wexler will show how people perceive color, why it is easy to abuse, and examples and how you can use it effectively to create dashboards that engage, inform, and enlighten. Steve will use five dashboards from the The Big Book of Dashboards that exemplify best practice in color use.
Steve Wexler (presenter for this ME TUG meeting), Jeffrey Shaffer, and Andy Cotgreave are the authors of The Big Book of Dashboards (Wiley, 2017), a comprehensive reference of practical and effective real-world business intelligence dashboards from a variety of industries. Steve has worked with ADP, Gallup, Deloitte, Convergys, Consumer Reports, The Economist, ConEd, D&B, Marist, Tradeweb, Tiffany, McKinsey & Company, and many other organizations to help them understand and visualize their data. Steve is a Tableau Zen Master, Iron Viz Champion, and Tableau Training Partner.
