# How to create a calculated field of a calculated field? Or maybe a formula that could work.

What I am trying to do is the following. I have all my data in volume (units), however I use it to calculate participation of each company and brand (%). So what I want to calculate is the variation in the participation of certain brand among 2 months.

For example, if I have this:

 Sales Company Jan Feb Mar Cats 100 120 110 Dogs 70 75 60 Fishes 80 70 75 Total 250 265 245

I calculate participation (I do this with quick table calculation).

 SoM Company Jan Feb Mar Cats 40% 45% 45% Dogs 28% 28% 24% Fishes 32% 26% 31%

And what I need to calculate now is variation in SoM:

 SoM Variance Company Jan Feb Mar Cats - 5% 0% Dogs - 0% -4% Fishes - -6% 4%

Any suggestions?

Hi Alexandrina,

In this case use table calculation fro running difference

Hope this helps,

Otherwise attach a sample workbook here and I will try to find solution for this.

Hi,

1) Drag the quick table calculation to Measures. This will create a calculated field and let you name it, fo it % of Total.

2) Create a new calculated field that is [% of Total] - LOOKUP([% of Total],-1), call this Diff of % of Total.

3) Drag Diff of % of Total to Text.

4) Right click on the pill you just added, choose Edit Table Calculation and set the compute using for the nested calculation to be on Month or Table (Across).

I set up an example view using Superstore sample data:
