Counts/Sums Along Same Date Axis from Different Fields

    Peter Swigert

I've got data structured like the below:

      IDEvent1Event2Event3
      15/6/20125/9/20127/1/2012
      24/3/20115/2/20135/5/2012
      311/19/20107/6/201612/25/2016

What I'm trying to make is a time series line chart, where the x axis is the date, the y axis is the count of the IDs, and there are three lines- each is the count of the ID that occurred on the date for event1, event2, and event3.

Is that possible in Tableau from the way my data is structured? I imagine I can pivot my data so that it looks like

      ID
      EventType
      Date
      1Event15/6/2012
      2Event25/2/2013
      3Event312/25/2016
      1Event25/9/2012
      1Event37/1/2012
      2Event35/5/2012

      etc.

and build the chart from there.

However,I'd really prefer to not have to do that in my data source itself (lots of other parts of my Tableau dashboard are based on the existing data structure as it is currently laid out, and it's by far the most efficient for these other aspects of the dashboard).

Is that pivoting action possible to perform within the chart calculations and rendering?

      Thanks!
