Selecting "max" non-numeric value from multiple rows

I am using rating data to get information for securities in a portfolio. For each CUSIP (unique identifier for a security), there can be multiple ratings depending on rating type. I need to select the "best" rating for the CUSIP, regardless of rating type. Because this column is alpha, when I use an LOD MAX function, it does not work as expected. I tried to add my own datasource of a spreadsheet with the ratings and my ranking, but I cannot mix data sources in an LOD expression. Is there a way to tell tableau what the order of a "MAX" should be? Or is there another way to do this?

      Thanks!
