May be you can create a calculated field to assign some Numeric values for the Rating symbol and Convert them to Integer if needed. Then use the calculated field in the LOD to determine the Max of that value.

hmmm, I could do a case statement...It's pretty big (over 60 rows) but it's definitely an option!
This gave me the highest rating, but when I bring in the other columns, i'm getting all the rows again. Still looking for ideas!

What does that mean?
Does your case statement assign 1-N to the various ratings?
Then MAX([calc]) should always get you the biggest. Other columns shouldn't impact that.
Maybe a sample workbook would help here.

Thanks everyone. I ended up doing this in the custom SQL query as I brought the data into tableau. As I think about it more, using a mapping spreadsheet and blending would have worked too.
