    Using Stored procedures in tableau

    Leonard Culberson

      Good afternoon all!

I have been reading the tableau document on using stored procedures.  I can not seem to grasp the idea and use. )-:)

Has anyone out there used stored procedures and if you have would you mind sharing with me how to use them?  What is the process and how to set this up in tableau?

ANY information you can share will be helpful!

Thanks in advance for any information!

      Leonard

I've never used it, because I've never had a need to    Several people recommend to not use them, but it really depends on your situation.  I'd suggest that if you don't have to use it then don't worry, most data typically comes from a table or view, strored procs are more specialised.

            Good morning Chris,

Thank you for responding.  I would prefer not to use this stored procedure process either,  but we do have this stored procedure created and we need to use it for performance efficiency.

We have a stored procedure created that creates a table(file) of table names from Clarity data dictionary.  Then we have a stored procedure that pulls the detail behind the clarity data dictionary table(file) name.

So one table(file) has all of the table names, then the other stored procedure uses that table name and pulls the detail associated with that table name.

Do you know of anyone who might could be of help using this type of stored procedure process?

I would really like to get some assistance if possible.

Again, thank you for your response!

I'll ask around to find out

Is there any chance you can use a view in the database that queries the stored procs ? I've never even tried that so I have no idea if it would work or not.

                Good morning Chris!

Yes I can use a VIEW .  We have used VIEWs before for other tables.  We had a VIEW created table for the Clarity data dictionary.  I used it and created a tableau dashboard for clarity data dictionary. It was in our TEST/DEV database environment.  What is happening now, they are moving into a PRODUCTION database environment.  They do not want to move this VIEW to PROD.  They want me to use a stored procedure process to display the clarity data dictionary dashboard.  They said it will be better performance in PROD, etc.  So I need to try and get this stored procedure process to work in Tableau.

I have a TABLE VIEW of all of the Clarity data dictionary tables.  Just a list(table) of the table names.  Then I have a stored procedure that, I think, is supposed to be "called" to query the table's detail information from a drop-down selection of the table listing.

I have read documentation on stored procedure use, but really can not understand.  I am one of those that has to be "shown" how to use it.

Thank you again for any assistance!

                  Chris,

I have lucked up upon something that "sort of works".  After many trial and errors.  It does not work, though, like I want it to or as I think it should.

                    Good morning Chris,

Thank you for your assistance.  Please let me know if you speak to anyone that may can help in this matter.

                    Thanks again!

Hi, I haven't found another solution that's better for you   If they are worried about the view being too slow, could you create an extract ?

                        Chris,

I don't think that creating a table view would create a performance issue.  I was using a table view in our TEST environment.  It seemed to perform fine.  I guess since we are moving into a PRODUCTION environment, they may be anticipating a possible performance degradation.

I was given a stored procedure and was told that it would be more efficient.

I have been working with this stored procedure process off and on for a couple of months or more.  I think I finally have it working, sort of.

I have a tableau workbook created with most of the data elements I will need.  But, it doesn't operate in the same fashion as using a table view?  I would think that it should.  It must be something I am not doing, since I have never used a stored procedure process.

Anyway, if you do find someone that may have experience using a stored procedure, please give them my contact information.  I would like to speak with them.

Thank you again for all your help!
