Are you connected live to Excel or some other data? If so, can you take an extract of the data source and do it again and see if it does a trick or not. Thanks
Thanks for your help. However, if I do it as an extract, I'll lose the live connection - meaning the refresh wouldn't work. Is that correct? If so, I don't want to do that. I need to be able to do a simple count on the dimensions.
Connecting live to SAP BW means you're working with a OLAP datasource, that is, a cube. As such, there are some differences when you compare working with a relational data source (SQL or Excel, for instance). On of these differences is that you can't use dimensions on calculated fields. This article describes more of them and alternatives: Understanding Functional Differences Between OLAP and Relational Data Source Connections | Tableau Software
For this particular case, these 2 approaches might help:
1. Define a calculated member that returns 1 when appropriate. In this example, I'm only counting when the there are some sales for a customer.
Drag your dimension into Detail and the calculated member to columns. You can add a MAX reference line to each line to show the total, if needed.
Because you'll bring all dimension members into the view, performance will take a hit.
2. Define the COUNTD as a measure on SAP BW, you can the use it as any other measure on Tableau.
Hope this helps!
Okay, I'll give this a whirl and post the results.
Thanks for your help, I wish there was an easier way, but something is better than nothing. =)
