subscriptions and date filters - Tableau online, live connection

    Liat Ferman

      Hi,

I have an email subscription on Tableau online for a report with relative date filter.

The filter is set to "last 24 hours" , but on the email I don't get the last 24 hours as I expect.

Why do I see different times on the email I get?

Might it be related to timezone issues, or the report doesn't refresh as I wish ...?

          Hi Liat

I believe that Tableau will pick up the date/time/ etc. from the system locale of the machine your server is installed.

If that was in a different time zone from yourself, I can well expect that dates and time are misaligned.

One way round it maybe to define your own relative filter rather than rely on the inbuilt - which relies on system settings

          then you have more control

My fellow ambassador wrote this excellent article - Base Relative Date Filter on Latest Date in Data

          Just a thought

          Best of luck

          Mark

Thanks Mark! But I'm not quite sure if it can help solve my problem:

The data I get on email is correct, if I go to the original report on Tableau online as soon as I get the Email, I see same data with the right time written on the filter:

But on the Email I get, I see the same data with wrong hours:

The timezone differences does not fit the timezone differences we have between me and server (the server is on GMT, I'm on GMT+3 and the emails I get are on GMT-7).

The data is correct do I'm not worried, but my users who are getting these email reports are confused with the dates. I guess I can manipulate the hours written on report's header, I just really want to understand why it happens...

            Thanks!

              Hi Liat

              Interesting

Easy first - Although your server may be physically located in GMT, have you check with your administrator that that date/time settings on the actual server are GMT?

(it could be set to GMT-7 even though is in GMT timezone, Server just picks up the locale system settings)

So if your admin happens to be Brazilian (just for example), and works in the UK, if on the machine they have set Brazil as their system defaults, that what you'll get... I admit its far fetched, but technically possible.

Alternatively...I wonder which date is being picked up/ used.

You may wish to check if these are appropriate, the date/time can vary depending on the data source

Adding Data Refresh Time Stamp to a View in a Dashboard | Tableau Software

Failing that, I'll move the thread to Server admin, in the hope a specialist can help

              Cheers

              Mark

                Hi,

Thank you Mark! You helped me a lot, even though the problem is yet to be solved !

The "data update time" finds an interesting thing- on tableau online report it's GMT-7 (meaning-it does not happen only on emails) whereas the filter holds the correct time on tableau-online and changes to GMT-7 time only on email! I'm working with live data connection...

My server's setting says GMT (it's actually physically not on GMT..)

I hope you guys from server admin can help!! Thanks in advance!

                  Hi Liat

Apologies, I mis-read something, which maybe key.

I thought (wrongly) that you were using Server, but you use Tableau Online. Is that right?

I ask because Tableau Online is hosted, and Seattle (where Tableau is based) happens to be.... GMT-7

It maybe coincidence, maybe not, but i wonder if your picking up those dates because of the above...

                  Could you confirm?

And just in case, I'll also call in my Server superhero Toby Erkson

Disclaimer, I have never used Tableau Online and I suspect Toby hasn't either.

                  Cheers

                  Mark

Yes! I'm using Tableau online, and it is totally makes sense...

But, could it be that Tableau convert the timezone online on website, but on emails it messed-up ... ?

Mark- you are on it!  I even found this idea that supports your case:

                      https://community.tableau.com/ideas/2805

So weird it is not implemented yet, especially since the website itself aware to timezone differences!

                      Thank you again!

I don't know where the Online servers are hosted...but that shouldn't matter, really.  The Idea given above is right and I up-voted it.

My servers are located in Oregon (PST) but I have users world-wide so many of the Schedules state "Pacific" so people know the Schedules will trigger at the given Pacific Time zone time:

We do have schedules without the word "Pacific" in them but I make it a point to let people know that all times are Pacific.  For my east coast folks we'll set up Schedules to match their time zone, thus 5AM Schedules are really meant for 8AM east coast time

What sucks as an administrator is that the PostGRE db timestamps are in UTC:  http://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/server/en-us/help.htm#data_dictionary.html?Highlight=time%20zone

However, log files are local time.  Oy!

                          Hi Liat

I marked your answer as correct, as I believe it answers the original question.

And thank you for finding the idea, I have up-voted to - makes a lot of sense!!

Thanks Toby for jumping in and providing your insight, very helpful as always.

I suspect in Server you have a little more control vs Online but it does seem like an oversight when you have to manage across time zones?!

                          All the best

                          Mark
