Downgrade Tableau Desktop version 9.3 to 9.1.3

      Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help to downgrade a packed workbook that was created in 9.3 to 9.1.3?

Tableau Reader can only open 9.1 and I need to send the packed workbook to someone that has Tableau Reader...

      I have tried:

1.) Downloading the newest version of Tableau reader. Did not work.

2.) I have tried to have Tableau v.9, with the data I want to open in Reader, open and 9.1 open and try and copy the dashboards over. Did not work.

      I have also tried

      1. Open the twb (not the twbx) file in Notepad ++
      2. Change all the instances of '9.3' to '9.1.3'
      3. Now open the twb in 9.1. (but couldn't open it)

I can see the below pop-up when i am trying to open the workbook.

Please help me if you know a solution. It would be much appreciated.

          i fixed this.

There was a minor mistake while changing in notepad.

          1. Open the twb (not the twbx) file in Notepad ++
          2. Change all the instances of '9.3' to '9.1.3 '9.1'
          3. Now open the twb in 9.1.
          4. Again you can change it to twbx file.

          You will be all set.

          This might help others.

          Thank you,

          Samhitha

I was pointed here from another thread.

Editing the XML in Notepad is a way to do things like change your version if you are desperate, but never forget that EDITING THE XML IS NEVER A SUPPORTED METHOD.

            This is only a hack.

And if you have used features in the higher version that were not in the lower version you are hacking the downgrade to, nobody can guarantee success on that.

Having said that, this method might bail you out in a pinch.  Be sure not to overwrite your original TWB when you save the hacked version!

Oh, and did I mention that this is not supported?

Tableau Reader is free software, although you've hacked the XML to downgrade it would be more supported by Tableau to simply upgrade Tableau Reader to a higher version.

I do hack the XML when a downgrade is needed, but I've seen a case recently where it wouldn't work (as Joe mentions) if you're using newer features and then downgrade then it won't work regardless of how much XML hacking you do
