I don't think you like solution with using parameter, but this is only the way I know of.
[Sub Drill Down]
if [Category] = [Parameter 1] then [Sub Category] ELSE "" END
Create hierarchy with Category and Sub Drill Down.
Only selected parameter's category is opened.

Thanks Shinichiro this helps. I would have preferred a slightly different approach but this is the best solution I've seen so far. I still don't want to go the parameter approach though. I tried something along similar lines.
If [Category] = "CAN" Then
This approach works for individual selections but gives aggregated graphs when nothing is selected.
Do you think that I can do something with this approach?
Thi is personal opinion, but
If your calculation is not dynamic, the demerit of using parameter is same or less than changing formula when new items are added.
