Hi Jie, welcome to the community.
IP addresses do not possess geospatial attribution on their own, you would need another data point associated with the IP address that Tableau could use on a map.
Could you provide an example of your dataset?
The data is a survey data, lots of respondents. for each respondent there are a IP address and other info like first, last, phone etc.
I want to map the distribution by IP address. Is that clear to you.
Tableau can't geocode an IP address to latitude / longitude automatically. You'll need to do this work yourself, using one of two mechanisms:
- "Prep" the data yourself by using a thirty party mapping service (Google Maps, Bing Maps, etc.) to geocode the IP address. Google for keywords like "free IP address geocoding" and you should find lots of stuff on the subject
- Use R to "dynamically" do the work. Example here: IP-based Geo-location in Tableau (New! Now with more R!) - Tableau Love ...and the live viz: https://tableau.russellchristopher.org/t/site/SkunkWorks/views/R-IPGeolocation/Dashboard1
