    Error opening View

    M S

      Setup:

Tableau Server is deployed to Windows Azure VM

Analysis Services is also deployed to the same Windows Azure VM.

      Here's what I did.

Created a Project [Project X] from Tableau Server.

      Open Tableau Desktop.

Connect to Analysis Server as my data source.

Add column and a row to worksheet.

Publish the worksheet to Project X, with embedded password.

After the worksheet has been published I got below error.

Even going directly to VM and open the View from Tableau server I got the same error below.

      Session Ended by Server

An unexpected error occurred. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator.

Database error 0x80004005: An error was encountered in the transport layer. Database error 0x80004005: The peer prematurely closed the connection. Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

      another Scenario.

I published the datasource to Tableau Server.

From Tableau Desktop, I chose the published datasource as my source

Then created a new worksheet and publish the workbook.

Again, I encountered the same error above.

          Hi,

What password are you embedding? Is it your own password or Run as Server user account? Could you check if you have given right access to in Analysis Services? Other thing that I would ensure is the data connector, if it has been installed in Tableau server?

it's the password of the account I used to access SSAS. The one I used to model my Worksheet from Tableau Desktop.

Could you provide more details about data connector?

The Tableau Server and SSAS are sitting on the same machine.

              Hi,

Please check the driver that you need to install on your Tableau server from here.

Drivers & Activation | Tableau Software

You should ensure that you have right drivers installed in your Tableau server. Also ensure that you have chosed "Embeded passsword" in authentication while you published it to Tableau server.

As I've mentioned in original post. Password has already been embedded.

Tableau was installed in the same machine as SSAS so I presume I don't need additional drivers.

I've just installed MS XML 6 as indicated from the list of drivers.

But again, the same error appears.

                  Hi,

Can you check if you have allowed users to embed credentials from Server --> Settings --> General?

Can you also check if you can change to prompt user for credentials, just to ensure that the problem in on Tableau side?

                    I tried 3 different scenarios:

                    SETUP #1

                    Embedded Credentials

                    - (checked) Allow publishers to embed credentials in a workbook or data source

                    - (checked) Allow publishers to schedule data extract refreshes

                    Saved Credentials

                    - (checked) Allow users to save passwords for data sources

                    - (unchecked) Allow users to save OAuth access tokens for data sources

                    SCENARIO #1.1 :

                    Open new Tableau Desktop instance.

                    1. Connect > Microsoft Analysis Services > Use Specific Username/ Pwd (u: "servername\user" p: "password")

                    2. Select Database; Select Cube

                    3. Go to Sheet 1; Drag 1 Measure and 1 Dimension property

                    4. Click Server > Publish Datasource

                    5. Select Project

                    6. Authentication = "Prompt user" ( no other choices available)

                    7. Click Publish

                    8. Click Server > Publish Workbook

                    9. Select Project

                    SCENARIO #1.2:

                    Open new Tableau Desktop instance.

                    1. Connect > Microsoft Analysis Services > Use Specific Username/ Pwd (u: "servername\user" p: "password")

                    -------------------------

                    SETUP #2

                    Embedded Credentials

                    - (unchecked) Allow publishers to embed credentials in a workbook or data source

                    - (disabled) Allow publishers to schedule data extract refreshes

                    SCENARIO #2.1:

                    1. Connect > Microsoft Analysis Services > Use Specific Username/ Pwd (u: "servername\user" p: "password")

                    7. Click Publish

                    8. Overwrite prompt pops-up > Click YES.

                    9. Click Server > Publish Workbook

                    10. Select Project

                    12. Set Workbook Name "Book 5 - Cred Uncheck"

                    13. Authentication = "Prompt user"

                    14. Click Publish

                    15. Preview windows says "An error occurred"

                    16. Click Open in Browser Window

                    17. Enter database credentials > Click Sign-in

                    18. Page says "Session Ended by Server. Database error 0x80004005: XML for Analysis parser: The 'D5178ADE-1BE7-4028-BAB4-79A7F143A4DD' session ID cannot be found. Either the session does not exist or it has already expired. Unable to connect to the server. "

[Verify Previous Publish if still working ]

                    19. Select Workbook Name = "Book 3 - Prompt" (published in Scenario #1.1)

                    20. Click "Sheet1"

                    21. Enter database credentials > Click Sign-in

                    22. "Sheet1" is displayed successfully

                    CONCLUSION:

Based on 3 scenarios above, it appears that only Scenario 1.1 is the correct approach to make it work.

Embedded Credentials must be enabled in Tableau Server Settings but Workbook must still be published as 'Prompt User'

                      Hi,

I still believe that you should be able to use 'Embeded credentials' with SSAS. I would suggest to check SSAS configurations. There is something that is not allowing you to use embeded credentials.
