The following are the options i tried
1.Click on the date->Select default properties->Selected the date format as "03/14/2001"---Date is not getting updated as the selected date.
2.Tried in clicking on the view date->more custom->Date part->month/day/year
I want the date to be displayed as 03/14/2001 instead of October 30,2013.

Have you tried right clicking on the datasource and selecting Date Properties and changing the default format in there?
In my data source the default date formate is "date"
Is the date a field in your Datasource or is a Parameter?
Dates in your Datasource can be formatted via the Default Date Properties (Datasource Global), you can format them individually by right clicking on the pill and going to Default Properties =-> Date Format, or you can change them in the view itself by formatting from the worksheet.
If it is a Parameter, then you'll need to change the format from inside the parameter itself.
Let me know if you have any trouble with this.
It is a filed from the datasource and the default property is date.
When you change the format either through the individual sheet/axis or through the default methods you should choose to use a custom format and then use the following: "mm-dd-yyyy" without the double-quotation marks.
You can change the default format for a date field by...
1) Right-Clicking it in the Dimensions Pane
2) Going down to default properties
3) Selecting Date Format
4) Choose custom and type: mm-dd-yyyy
This will change default formatting. In order to change the formatting for a parameter follow the same steps.
1) Create Date Parameter
2) Choose Data Type Date and Set the Current value to the first of a month.
3) Set a Range, a range is needed to produce a slider. Without a slider the only option is a type in. With a type in the user has to type in a full date and not a formatted date.
4) Set the Stepsize to 1 Month
5) Change your display format mm-dd-yyyy
You can do this with a drop down parameter, but it would involve making a calculated field that firstly would turn everything into a string. The issue would be that it would sort things alphabetically instead of via the data source order (chronologically) so it may not be the best fit.
I tried the with Date(Expression) and i got it right.
I have date field in my SQL data source which is in the mm/dd/yyyy format.I wanted the date to displayed in the same format in my tableau Reports.
On using the Date(Expression) i could get this resolved.
