Tableau Server license for user in the Network

    Jatindra Pangging

      Hi,

I'm doing a POC for my Client to use Tableau as a Reporting/Visualization tool.

What i'm concerned about is the licensing for the end/business user.

For e.g. once I upload the dashboard to the Tableau server, do the business user also has to be a licensed user to view the dashboard. I come from Microsoft BI background, like in SSRS anyone can view the report through SSRS reporting Server URL, we just have to add the userid in the Network to the Reporting Server.

What other options do I have to share the report with the Business User.

      Thanks,

      Jatin

          Hi Jatindra,

Tableau Server has two licensing schemes,

one is per Named User (called Server Interactor),

another is per Core (with unlimited number of users).

The latter one is similar to MS BI (and SSRS as a part of a stack),

where MS SQL EE is licensed per Core.

There is a possibility for some views / dashboards to be saved --

together with their data in a form of data extracts --

as a packaged workbook file (*.twbx).

Those packaged workbooks could be read "off-line"

          with a free-to-use Tableau Reader.

          Hope this could help.

          Yours,

          Yuri

            Thanks for your reply!

That makes sense and hopefully considering the client is one of the biggest names in the Financial Sector they should have core based licensing.

I'm not sure how feasible it would be asking all the Business users to download Tableau reader, get it installed and then view the dashboards. It would be much more easier for them to view the dashboards using a URL or maybe on share-point.

Also the data connection should be live so that the Business Users can view updated Dashboards all day or at-least need to schedule it before the Business Users can view updated Dashboards when they come in the morning. And a completely automated process, scheduling or sending out a mail to the Business Users at a particular time.

Any suggestions on what would be the best approach if we are not considering Tableau Reader.

            Thanks,

            Jatin

Tableau Server has a subscription option that will email views to subscribers at designated intervals. The users have to have an account in Tableau Server. The users have to log on and subscribe to the desired views themselves -- a workaround is to create a mailing list to send subscriptions to everyone in the list.

              Best,

              John
