    Help, errors in TabMon log.

    Bill Demsky

      Hi

      We have tabmon installed and running well. We are getting metrics on all the categories except network.

      We are getting these errors in the log

      2015-11-16 07:47:39,767 [16] DEBUG TabMon.Counters.Perfmon.PerfmonCounter - Error sampling counter Primary\xxxxxxxxxxxx\Perfmon\Network Interface\Bytes Received/sec\: Counter is not single instance, an instance name needs to be specified.

      2015-11-16 07:47:39,772 [16] DEBUG TabMon.Counters.Perfmon.PerfmonCounter - Error sampling counter Primary\xxxxxxxxxxxx\Perfmon\Network Interface\Bytes Sent/sec\: Counter is not single instance, an instance name needs to be specified.

      2015-11-16 07:47:39,767 [16] DEBUG TabMon.Counters.Perfmon.PerfmonCounter - Error sampling counter Primary\xxxxxxxxxxxx\Perfmon\Network Interface\Bytes Received/sec\: Counter is not single instance, an instance name needs to be specified.
      2015-11-16 07:47:39,772 [16] DEBUG TabMon.Counters.Perfmon.PerfmonCounter - Error sampling counter Primary\xxxxxxxxxxxx\Perfmon\Network Interface\Bytes Sent/sec\: Counter is not single instance, an instance name needs to be specified.

      our counters config file extract is below, tried to add an instance to specify the network interface, but the service would not start with that addition to the counter config.

      Category name="Network Interface">

            <Counter name="Bytes Received/sec" />

            <Counter name="Bytes Sent/sec" />

          </Category>

      Ipconfig provides this for the network adapter.

      Description . . . . . . . . . . . : vmxnet3 Ethernet AdapterDescription . . . . . . . . . . . : vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter

      Any thoughts on where to look.

      Thanks

      Bill

          Hi Bill,

          That's strange... the way TabMon works is that if an instance is not specified, we will grab all instances that the parent category has.

          If you open up Perfmon, click "Add Counters" and then select the "Network Interface" category, do you see the "Bytes Received/sec" and "Bytes Sent/sec" counters listed?  And what values do you see listed under "Instances of selected object"?

            Justin,

            I see just one instance, “vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter” in perf mon.

              Try replacing the existing "Network Interface" config section in Counters.config to this:

                  <Category name="Network Interface">

                    <Counter name="Bytes Received/sec">

                      <Instance name="vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter" />

                    </Counter>

                    <Counter name="Bytes Sent/sec">

                      <Instance name="vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter" />

                    </Counter>

                  </Category>

              And then restart TabMon.  You should see this counter start pulling in.  Even if it can't find it, if the XML is formatted correctly, the service should start.

              Let me know how it goes!  In the meantime, I'll take a look at the TabMon code and see if we have a bug here.

                Put the changes in below, restarted service, still getting the same error in the tabmon log.

                2015-11-17 14:46:58,080  DEBUG TabMon.Counters.Perfmon.PerfmonCounter - Error sampling counter Primary\xxxxxxxxxxxxxx\Perfmon\Network Interface\Bytes Received/sec\: Counter is not single instance, an instance name needs to be specified.

                  Hi Bill,

                  Thanks for testing that out.  I took a look at the code around what's going on here and unfortunately it looks like we have a bug where multi-instance Perfmon counter categories with only a single instance in them sometimes aren't being loaded correctly.  I've filed an issue for this up at:

                  Bug: Multi-instance Perfmon counter categories with only a single instance aren't loaded correctly. · Issue #22 · tablea…

                  This should be an easy fix that we'll get into the next version of TabMon, but unfortunately there isn't a good workaround for now.  Sorry for the hassle!
