    Performance issue in Server

    Bhuwan Vikram Singh

      Hi Guys ,

One of client is facing performance issue .Dashboard's performance is fine in tableau desktop but after publishing

performance  gets very bad .I know there are so many constraints for degrading the performance in server .

E.g : Concurrent users , RAM , network speed ,core ,complex dashboards ( filters etc),but they do not have

huge users & complex dashboard .

      Details :

      Source : Excel

no of data sources for dashboard : 3

      No or records : 1333302 ( 3 sources )

      No of dashboards : 5

I am not sure about server's configuration , please anyone give me best practices for server's performance I will

      be thankful .

      Regards ,

      Bhuwan

          Hi

Try extract and unhide all unused fields and try.

          Thanks

            Hi Sankar ,

Thank you ,they have used extract only  .

I will suggest for hide the unused column .

            Regards ,

Agree with Sankar. Also try using packaged workbook instead of workbook with server published data source, If you are not already using.

                Hi Kishan ,

You mean to say need to  save workbook as TWBX and publish the same ( Workbook & data source ) ?

                Any other input ?

I think we need to check the RAM of tableau server  ( Dedicated to tableau) , n/w speed ,database response time

right ? actual I got these inputs  from online but do not know about reality

                regards ,

                Bhuwan

@bhuvan : Yes, make it a TWBX that would help little as both WB and DS are in same package. observer the difference if any.

Tableau does sends out and provides reports regarding performance (utilization of RAM, CPU etc.). Talk to your admin and have those reports analyse. These reports will give you an idea if any H/W bottlenecks are there.

Please explain the above better.  It's good to know exactly what is having the issue.

                    1. There is one Tableau workbook that contains 5 dashboards, correct?
                    2. There are 3 separate data sources for this workbook and all of them are Excel, correct?
                    3. Is the data being blended?  Are all of the data sources extracts or live connections or a combination of both?
                    4. What version of Tableau are you using?

A performance recording is what's needed to possibly help figure out the issue.

Right now I would focus on "fixing" the workbook and worry less about the Server.

Other things that can affect Server performance is number of processes (like background), queuing, disk I/O, and virtual vs. physical server.

In our environment we would consider those data sources fairly small.

I would highly encourage use of the Performance Recorder feature.

                        Meanwhile:

What version of Tableau Server is running?

                        Is it a single-node installation?

Is the Server host a VM or dedicated iron? How many Cores ?

                          Hi Toby ,

                          • Yes only workbook
                          • All are them from Excel
                          • No data blending & all are TDE
                          • Tableau version is 8.2.6

I will explain the process , earlier client had given us 5 to 10 excel sheet and we had implemented  data blending

& so many calculated fields according to client requirement and dashboards were very slow because of

these data blending & almost 150 calculated fields  (1 workbook ,4 dashboards ).

Now they had made new simple dashboards compare to old dashboards  ,  I have explained about  this in my 1st mail ( 1 workbook , 4 dashboards ,no data blending , 3 sources all are independent , source is Excel ) according to them

performance is fine in desktop but performance get worst after publishing on server and concurrent users are also

                          only two.

So we had taken same 3 sources (Excel) and exported to oracle and made same dashboards one copy using LIVE

from Oracle & one copy using 3 TDE , I observed there is no difference in performance    ( Oracle & Excel) .

I am reminding there are not facing performance issue in Tableau Desktop they are facing performance issue

in Tableau Server , I did not publish my dashboard ( Oracle )  to their server and I do not know about their Server's

configuration because I am new in this project any way I have asked them about their configuration .

So these are the details .

                          Regards ,

                          Bhuwan

                            Hi Bhuwan,

As others have mentioned, a performance recording comparison between Server and Desktop is usually the best starting point for troubleshooting these sort of issues.

                              Hi Ken ,

                              Tableau server : 8.2.6

I am not sure about configuration I have asked them about configuration waiting for the details .

I guess server is single node .

                              Regards ,

                                Hi Ken ,

                                Its single node installation

                                RAM : 32 GB

                                Core : 8
