Check out this KB. It is not maintained, but it should still be instructive to what you need with swapping measures based on parameters. NOTE - if you want to show the labels correctly in the charts, create a calculated field with just the parameter as the formula, then you can place it on columns/rows to label which ever measure you're switching between.
Welcome to Tableau and the community. You are on the right track here with your approach. All you now need is,
. create a call filed 'Show Selected' as below
. If [param] = <field name> then"highlight" else "none" end
. drag this field to color shelf
. show parameter control.
thats it, when you select the param value will highlight the selected value on the view.
you can also simplify your calc by true false one like [param] = <field name> and drop on the color shelf and pick colors.
