If you just need to connect to SAP then you do not need to install Tableau Server, however as per my understanding Tableau desktop is kind of developer version wherein you can develop the report and share it across. But when it comes to implementation of security you need to have the Tableau server also inorder to make your reports online you need that... there are many other features..
To be precised you can directly connect to SAP using the inbuilt connectors without Tableau Server. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE.
Thanku but i am confused in connection with SAP BW because in infocube there is no option for business object of SAP
SAP ERP,I heared that Tableau does not connect directly to SAP ERP like SCM , SRM,ECC, PLM etc , If we have to connect SAP ERP then we have to go through SAP BW .But data comes to any ERP from database only ( SQL,Oracle etc ) , So why don't we connect directly to ERP's database ?
Because if client does not have SAP BW
or they do not want spend money on SAP BW then what would be the solution .
8.2 has a inbuilt connector for SAP HANA but never used it.. and I am not sure why someone would go for a ODBC when tableau has an inbuilt connector?
Can you guys please help me understand.. :-) Thanks in advance..!! :-)
not all inbuilt connections are supported by SAP from my understanding. There have been times where I have pulled the hair off my head trying to get this to work and was able to do using ODBC rather than inbuilt within Tableau. It's a 50/50 shot of working with inbuilt vs odbc for some reason that even I am not aware off.
ok thanks but what can i do? please help me!
