Reimporting data to an extract with materialized data elements

I rebently was playing with Volvo Ocean Race data publishing to Tableau Public. I wanted to see how Public worked.

      https://public.tableausoftware.com/workbooks/VolvoOceanRace-2014Leg2

In the process I found that Tableau decided to materialize a couple bin calculations I did. These bin results happen to be used in a large number of shape assignments (since removed). The issue I found I hope someone can help me with.

With the next updated data feed (they are published every 3 hours) I refreshed the extract. This failed due to the materialized data elements not being in the data source.

I had to recreate the bins, and reassign all the shapes each time I imported. And the materialized calculated fields remained in the extract albeit unusable.

Has anyone experienced Tableau materializing their data? If so, how did you handle subsequent data updates?
