With Tableau Server is it correct to assume that if you are using LDAP (Active Directory) authentication that if you assign groups to various assets , that is requirement needed to manage the variation in users on a server core licensing model.

Well, in Tableau there is no LDAP authentication, when you authenticate against Active Directory, then the authentication happens thru kerberos protocol. Even if groups are stored in LDAP model in Active Directory (authorization).

Back to you questions, you can use Active Directory authorization with named user licensing as long as the number of synchronized users are less or equal than the licensed user count.
