How to make a Cumulative Flow Diagram (CFD)

    Tom Walter

      Hi all,

I'm trying to create a Cumulative Flow Diagram in Tableau. This is a chart that shows bottlenecks in a workflow.

Given some progress tracking data that looks like this:

      DateTaskStep
      1-JanATodo
      2-JanBTodo
      3-JanAIn progress
      5-JanBIn progress
      7-JanCTodo
      10-JanADone

I want to create an area chart that shows the number of tasks that are in a particular step on each date. It should look something like this:

      Capture.PNG

Under the hood, there needs to be a count of tasks in each step, but it needs to account for the fact that a task should only be in one step at a time, so a simple running total over time doesn't work (because that simply counts the number of tasks that have ever been at a particular step, rather than those which are in that step on the relevant date).

The data I mocked up to create the example chart above might help clarify this:

      DateTodoIn ProgressDone
      1-Jan100
      2-Jan200
      3-Jan110
      5-Jan020
      7-Jan120
      10-Jan111

Any ideas how to get this one to work?

      Cheers

      Tom
