# How to calculate percent difference month-to-month but for for the right measures?

I have been a decent tableau user and couldn't break this calculation puzzle. I am pretty sure there is a way to do it just cannot figure out how.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Attached is a sample workbook.

All I am looking for is percent difference in price increase in e.g. march 2013 from mar 2012 but A to A relationship and B to B relationship. I have tried every possible combination in the table calculation but it seems to calculate the previous row all the time. And doesn't skip a row to detect an A in the previous pane.

If you re-arrange your view like so, and right click on SUM(Price)>>"Quick Table Calculation>>"Percent Difference", you will get the following results--what is your expected outcome/end result?  A mock up would be helpful if this is not what you're after.

Hi Matthew,

Actually this gets the job done, I would have preferred to look at the percent difference in the format i originally sent where Group and Month are in a matrix format but i am not positive if  that's even possible without changing the format.

Thanks very much for your expertise.

You can create a view like this, then right click on the 2012 year and "Hide" it or use another method for hiding the previous year.  I just thought the other setup was a bit easier to understand and read. Anyway, I hope this helps--cheers.

I kept the previous formatting you showed but kept the second one as a backup.

Thanks Matthew
