Are you using 2 data sources on a single view? If so, you must use the LINKING field somewhere in the view.
If you can post a screenshot of your full Tableau pane, or better yet post your workbook, you'll get better assistance.
This may be useful to you:
There are some comments on this error in this Idea's comments section:
It sounds like you've definitely got a data blend scenario. As Mark has suggested, placing the linking field on the Detail shelf (or elsewhere in the view) may resolve your error. I'm still not quite sure what causes this error, or what it means, though...
Also, it sounds like you are already using Version 8.1 (based on your description of changing the total aggregation)--when I was receiving this error, I was on version 8.0 and I was told that switching the primary and secondary data sources (these are defined based on which data source the first field pulled into the view is coming from) will resolve the error in version 8.0. In Version 8.1, I did not need the linking field in the view to resolve the error.
Regardless, this is a very strange error message and one I would love to understand better.
Thank you for your help.Placing the linking field on the detail solved my issue.
