Option (short) Option (long) Argument Description --incremental Runs the incremental refresh operation. --synchronous Runs the full refresh operation immediately in the foreground.
You could not have both commands on the same line.
I just tried removing the --synchronous option and got the same error message as before.
I think you need to specify the column that drives the incremental extract when you first create the full extract from Desktop, before publishing to Server. That is the only way I've managed to do it.
Thanks Richard. I'm not terribly well versed in Tableau. Can you provide more detail on the process?
Replying from my phone and I won't be online for a while, so this will be a bit brief. Basically when you create an extract there are some options in the dialog which allow you to define what field to use for incremental updates - even when you first create the extract.

Right click on the data source and select 'Extract Data'.
Under 'Number of Rows' check 'Incremental refresh'
Populate 'Identify new rows using column:' with the field you want to use for the incremental
Run the first incremental refresh by hitting the Extract button and then save the workbook.
When you publish the workbook the incremental option will now be available.
