Sorry client confidentiality prevents me from posting exact work book but you can see the issues in the images. I will try to recreate in sample and post.
I created fresh workbooks in both 8.05 and 8.1 and found I was able to format the background color of the pane the same way in both versions. I also verified that I was able to use 8.1 to change the background color of a workbook originally created in 8.05.
There are (at least) two ways to get to the interface for this.
- Right-click on the pane in the worksheet and choose Format..., then click on the paint can icon in the Format pane (as pictured in Ville Tyrväinen's answer).
- Alternately, pull down the Format menu and choose Shading...
- In the Format Shading pane, select the Sheet tab.
- In the Default section of the Sheet tab, click on the color picker next to Pane (which by default will just say "None" - so it is not obvious that it is a color picker!) and select the desired color.
Doing so will change the background color of the worksheet's pane:
